For the past four years, I’ve kept track of every movie I’ve watched. Some months are big (I watched 15 in August), but this past September was quite small. I like to do little micro reviews, so here are the three movies I watched in September.
Here Comes the Boom – This movie blew me away. I went in expecting a mediocre Happy Madison production but was instead greeted with an intelligent, funny, and feel good movie. Henry Winkler, Selma Hayek, and Kevin James were all incredible in their roles. You could tell James’ previous amateur wrestling experience made his character believable and I’m sure I’ll be revisiting this film in the future.
Volcano – This was one of my favorite films to watch in the 90’s. It seemed to air on HBO all the time and Tommy Lee Jones and Anne Heche’s management of a Volcano in downtown LA was always a fun time. I haven’t seen the film in at least twenty years, and I found it to still be quite enjoyable. The special effects held up reasonably well and I really thought this film was going to make Anne Heche a star. I was wrong.
The Matrix Reloaded – My excitement for the new Matrix trailer sent me back to the early 2000s. Last year, I watched The Matrix for the first time in a very long time. I haven’t seen Reloaded since I left the theater in 2003 disappointed. I never saw Revelations, because Reloaded was enough to sour me on the franchise.
So I went into Reloaded with more mature eyes and with an attempt to see the philosophical messaging of the film. The messaging was sound at times, but the film is a mess. The story is terrible and outside of the fantastic highway scene there is not much to like. I’m not sure if I’m going to try and sit through Revelations before the new film comes out after watching this stinker.
