Game Genie/Shark

Today was the first day I had a free afternoon so the last thing I wanted to do was work. I hoped on some retro sites and these pictures popped up.

To borrow a phrase from Brandon I was like “ Hey I had those”

Those being the Game Genie for the NES and Game Shark for the Original PlayStation.

I was a decent gamer, but I heard the Game Genie would help with certain games so I bought one. It came with cheat codes and they would “help” you best levels and such. I remember playing around with Mike Tyson’s punch out and mess around with some codes and wound but beating the game. I found it worth the money, but I didn’t depend on it like I thought I would.

Fast Forward to the PS days. With the PlayStation I mainly played Wrestling games and Final Fantasy 7. I saw the advertisement for the GameShark which pretty much was the game genie for the PS. I bought it with hopes it would help be get past a level in FF7.
I was on disc 2 of 3 which had taken me a long time to get to so I was looking forward to advancing. However I plugged in the Game Shark and put in the code. What I didn’t know was that it formatted my memory card which means I lost ALL my progress, I know I should have had a back up, but I didn’t.

When I realized what had happened I was so mad I didn’t play anything for like three months.  I did restart the game with the cheat code. It gave me more power in battles and money to buy supplies. It took a long time, but I was happy to get back to where I was.

Overall the best thing about these devices is that I could write about them today. I now stick yo just pushing through the hard stuff and feeling the satisfaction of a job well done.

It really is true, Cheaters never win!

  1. I never had a GameShark or GameGenie but I always wanted one. I remember how confusing they got once the Playstation arrived and the codes got way more complex! Damn shame about your memory card. I remember losing HOURS of progress in GTA Vice City due to a glitch if you saved at a certain spot and I was so pissed off I didn’t play for months!
