Championship Vinyl 001
Welcome to the first episode of Championship Vinyl. I hope that wit these musical posts I can somehow let you into the music that I love. Who knows maybe you’ll find a treasure that you didn’t even know you needed. If you click on the song title it will take you to the youtube video.
Well lets get on with it
Song 1: Modern Love by David Bowie
This song was released in 1983 and while I was around six year old I would discover it later. The up tempos dance vibe always drew me to this song. One of the fun facts about this tune is that Stevie Ray Vaughn plays guitar on it.
Favorite Lyric: “Get’s me to the Church on time”
Song 2: Uninvited by Alanis Morissette
This song was released on the 1998 City of Angels Soundtrack. As a huge fan of “angry” Alanis this haunting song drew me in hook line and sinker. I liked the movie well enough as Meg Ryan’s character falls in love with Nic Cage who plays and angel who likewise falls in love. (Spoiler) In a cruel twist, Nic decides to give up his Angel status to become human so he can be with Meg, Sadly shortly after they go away she is killed.
This song is something that I listen to when I am in a dark mood, I somehow find comfort in it.
Favorite Lyric: I don’t think you unworthy, I need a moment to deliberate
Song 3: Hush by Deep Purple
Deep Purple, an awesome band name, release this fun and funky grove on their debut album Shades of Deep Purple in 1968. This was way before my time, but growing up with a Mom and Uncle who loved all things music I would hear this on many Saturday’s while someone blare different tunes while we were chilling outside.
I heard it again some years later as a cover on the I Know What You Did Last Summer Soundtrack. While the Kula Shaker cover rocks, I am partial to the original. There is just something magic about the jam session vibe this song gives.
Favorite Lyric: Hush, hush, I thought I heard her calling my name now
Hush, hush,She broke my heart but I love her just the same now
Song 4: Some of It by Eric Church
So from time to time I will put something more recent on the list. I love good country music and while that’s becoming rare to hear these days, I found myself to be a fan of Eric Church.
Some of It is it the second single from his Desperate Man CD from 2019. I feel involve with the feeling I was sitting with a friend who was giving me advice on how to live in this complicated world. In a nutshell I picked this song because I like it.
Favorite Lyric: Mama ain’t a shrink, daddy ain’t a bank, And God ain’t wishin’ well. Money ain’t rich, everybody sins, and nobody wins in a fight, and sometimes wrong gets right
Song 5: I Believe When I Fall In Love (It Will Be Forever) by Stevie Wonder
For the final song today I will pull from the movie that inspired all this. High Fidelity is a movie chock full of great music and I can assure you that this won’t be the only song from the soundtrack that I’ll feature.
The soulful song was released in 1972, but as I shared I heard it first as it was the music over the closing credits of the movie. While I am a fan of Stevie Wonder, I felt this was at the time the perfect love song. I remember still working at the music store and playing this over the speakers. I could feel the pure passion in Wonder’s voice. It has been covered many times, but like Hush, nothing beats the original.
Favorite Lyric: When the truths of love are planted firm, They won’t be hard to find,
Thanks for kinda listening! See you next time… and there will be a next time!

Despite my first concert ever being Deep Purple, Dio, and The Scorpions, I totally forgot about Hush! What a classic song!
I’m also a huge fan of Uninvited but it’s been missing from my playlists. I never got around to watching City of Angels, although I did buy it on DVD for .69 last year at Goodwill. I’m kinda glad I read your synopsis and saved myself a couple of hours. But damn, what a great soundtrack.
