My Top 100 Songs from Twelve Years Ago

Back in 2013, I took some time to assemble as many journal and blog posts that I still had into an ebook for myself. Recently, I’ve taken some time to scroll through some of these old thoughts and stories and I ran across this one project that is a bit of an embarrassment. I called it The Eighty-Eight and it was a shameful rip off of another blog called 83 Goals or something to that effect. Basically, the idea was to have a set amount of goals to accomplish and use the blog to track the status of it.

I loved the idea so much, I attempted to mimic it but I really dropped the ball. I forced myself to make a list of goals and then shortly thereafter I changed them, and then changed them again. Some of the goals were authentic and others were lets just say, goals of opportunity. A prime example would be: “own a professional sports team.” Like seriously? That was never going to happen… but then I learned about this crowdfunding MyFootballClub thing and next thing you know I’m an owner of a professional sports team.

I’m a bit off-topic here, but needless to say The Eighty-Eight is not a blog I look back on fondly, but not everything was a bust. For example; I put some goals on there of things I’d like to try or better define for myself. Things that I wouldn’t normally do, but now that I had the blog, I did them. So, I painted my first ever picture, went geocaching, and started shaving with a safety razor (something I still do). Then I wrote out my top twenty-five favorite movies after agonizing for days regarding the order. Then I undertook my biggest organization project and I assembled my Top 100 Songs.

I had a blast looking over this list and I’m currently working on a playlist of these songs. No doubt, my list would be drastically different today, but I thought it was a fun snapshot of what I enjoyed back in 2010. As you’ll see from the blog post, my initial goal was 500 songs and eventually I threw in towel.

  1. When I was a teenager like 14 I used to read this magazine that would have goals for the month. So I do things on a technicality. One of the goals was something like find a new form of exercise. I felt watching an infomercial on a exercise product counted. Or there would be some appearance related ones like wear barrettes in your hair. I would get my barrettes put them on and wear them for about 10 minutes at home. Take them off then check that off on the list.

    1. That’s fun! I always loved when magazines offered weird little suggestions like that. It was so isolating reading a magazine, yet you felt connected due to suggestions to go out and do something.

I do like the idea of doing one goal a month and it definitely makes me feel better knowing that other folks took shortcuts to accomplish them. Ha!
