Ghostbusters: Afterlife Cereal

In 1985, Ralston created the first Ghostbusters cereal. Ralton (originally named The Ralston-Purina Company) was a company that produced many of the popular tie-in cereals of the 80’s including Batman, GI Joe, Gremlins, Transformers, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turltes. The one thing all the Ralston cereals had in common was they tasted pretty bad, but thanks to the tie-ins us 80’s kids couldn’t wait to eat them. I remember bugging my parents to buy me The Ghostbusters cereal and when they finally gave in, I was thrilled to have the big gorgeous box, but when it came time to eat the cereal I would have preferred a nice bowl of Apple Jacks or Fruity Peebles. Ya know, cereal with flavor.

Despite my previous terrible experience with a Ghostbusters cereal, when I heard a new cereal was coming out as a tie-in for the new Afterlife movie, I made a trip to Walmart a priority to find it.

It was my lucky day, because not only did I find the cereal on an endcap, I also found a full size Turboman doll!

So, the first thing I noticed is the Ghostbusters cereal box is fantastic. It looks amazing front and back and I love it. It’s so frigging cool I’m thinking of saving the box once I finish off the cereal.

How does it taste? Pretty damn good. My wife compared it to a berry Captain Crunch, I’m not sure I totally agree. It’s has a light, sweet, fruity taste and is accompanied by a few classic marshmallows. It’s not the greatest cereal, but I’d say it’s a solid seven out of a ten and is something I would buy on occasion even without the Ghostbusters branding.

Overall, I’m very satisfied with the Ghostbusters cereal and it will definitely make this new movie that much more memorable. I’m a little bummed Hi-C didn’t re-release Ecto Cooler like they did with the 2016 Ghostbusters movie, but at least we got an upgraded cereal. General Mills did a fantastic job marketing and creating an edible product that will surely replace the horrible memories of the flavorless Ralston cereal of the 80’s.

  1. I loved all the gimmick cereals when i was a kid. My favorite was the Super Mario Bros / Zelda Cereal which had to bags of cereal in the box. I recall the original ghostbusters cereal being terrible, but I didn’t know a new one was out.
